Sam is studying to be Quantity Surveyor and has worked for Lanview for the past 4 years – supplementing his learning with real-world experience. Here’s Sam talking more about his role and the skills he’s learnt:
What did you do before Lanview?
When I first left school, I worked for Sainsburys in various roles – familiar territory for most 17-year-olds. After I gained a Level 3 BTEC in Construction from Bromley College, I set my sights on becoming a Quantity Surveyor. The degree I’m currently working towards is a BSc (Hons) Chartered Surveying Degree Apprenticeship. I study one day a week at London South Bank University and the rest of the week is spent supplementing my learning at Lanview.
Tell us more about your role?
My role at Lanview is busy and I enjoy it. I’m responsible for looking after a leading UK retail account. Depending on the scope of the project this involves liaising with the client’s cost consultant or Principal Contractor planning costs. It’s a varied role. Whilst I mainly look after the project from a financial standpoint, I can get involved at every level, when I need to.
What do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the variety of work and the challenge of not always knowing what the day will bring. Over the years I’ve worked with many different people and learnt new skills. I’ve learnt that managing expectations, being assertive and level-headed are important traits of being a good QS.
What do you get up to when you’re not studying or working?
I’ve just bought my first property with my partner, which we’re now in the throes of decorating. Also, a lot of friends seem to be tying the knot at the same time, so it feels as though I’m constantly on a stag do. Not that I’m complaining!
